SUMMARY:2024 Oceana Air Show
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, the Beachcombers have been supporting the Virginia Patriot Guard Riders with their vignette at the Oceana Air Show.  This year will be like last year with our cars on the Tarmac each day of the air show as part of the “Static Display”.  We will be adjacent to where the VPG will have their motorcycles (left/southwest of show center).  We will be escorting dignitaries in our cars each day of the air show.  Knowing the Oceana Air show website (here) indicates the air show is Saturday and Sunday.  There is an air show on Friday.  The Friday air show is not open to the public.  It is open only to DOD members\, their families\, and STEM 5th graders from local schools.  We will open the air show each day.  This year’s theme is “Inspire\, Educate\, Soar”.  Our vignette will start at 10:00AM and should be finished around 10:30AM or so.  After the vignette\, you can leave NAS Oceana or return to the static display and watch the air show.  Later if you wish\, you will be able to leave before the end of the air show.  The air show will end after the Blue Angles fly.  They are scheduled to start at 3:00PM. \nLt. Amanda Lee\, a graduate of ODU (B.S. in Biochemistry)\, will be flying Blue Angel #4 (the slot)\, during the show.  The link here has all of the officers on the current Blue Angel’s team.  You can read about her\, as well as all of the team members. \nAll drivers and passengers need to be vetted!  Alternates too!  We will be filling out forms for this special base access.  The exception to this is if you have a DOD ID which already gives you base access.  Our vetting form was submitted August 28th.  So now\, only Beachcombers with DOD IDs (or others who are on the vetting paperwork) can fill in if you cannot make it. \nWith our support each of the 3 days of the air show\, we will be needing 6-8 cars each day on Saturday and Sunday.  On Friday\, we can have 8 cars\, but some may not be participating in the vignette.  If we already have 8 cars on Friday\, 8 on Saturday\, 8 on Sunday\, please sign up as an alternate for which days you can be available.  It is inevitable that personal reasons get in the way of attending\, and we need to go down the list of alternates who have been vetted to ensure we have enough cars to support the VPG. \nWe have a special guest this year!  Richard Petty’s grandson\, Thad\, will be participating in our vignette on Saturday and Sunday!  He will be in his NASCAR truck and parked alongside our group.  A link to read a little about Thad is here. \nKnow that this is a rain or shine event!  Should the Air Boss running each day’s Air Show decide to cancel/postpone that day’s show due to weather\, I’ll let each participant know. \nFor those interested in knowing more about the Virginia Patriot Guard\, you can visit their website here. \nWe will be staging on base each day at 7:30AM at the Navy Exchange (NEX) which off of Tomcat Blvd and before/outside the Main Gate (Gate 1). The address of the NEX is within the blue “VENUES” box on this page which has a navigation link for your cell phone when driving in your car.  We will roll when all participants have arrived or no later than 8:00AM turn left on Tomcat Blvd and proceed through the Main Gate.  Once past the Main Gate\, we will proceed to where we have our static display which will have us roll through an on-base checkpoint.  For participants specific details will be forthcoming with an email each will receive before Monday\, September 16th. \nHere are the beachcombers participating (listed by car) each day at the Air Show: \nFriday\, September 20th (cars listed after the 8th are alternates): \n\nBill Kaelin\nMike Ware\nAnnie Lahren\nPete Taylor\nJohnny Jones\nBob Bray\nTom Quicke\nJay Vega\n\n\n\nSaturday\, September 21st (cars listed after the 8th are alternates): \n\n\nDee Dee and Howard Hodges\nWendy Hanson and Bill Kaelin\nLV and Tank Torain\nPreston Powers\nRuth Baum\nTerrie and Kent Wagoner\nAnnie Lahren\nPete Taylor\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 22nd (cars listed after the 8th are alternates): \n\n\nBill Kaelin\nJohn Pitts\nKaren and Dave Ambrose\nAnnie Lahren\nRalph Scichilone\nKristie Hollingsworth\nPete Taylor\nMike Ware\n\n\n\n  \nThese lists will be updated periodically.  These lists last updated on September 21st.

His email is: bobmeyerva@gmail.com. \nRegional caravans will form and join other caravans as they travel across the United States to meet in Bowling Green\, Kentucky for four days of festivities at the National Corvette Museum. SUMMARY:2024 NCRS National Convention
DESCRIPTION:NCRS 2024 Hampton Roads\, VA National Convention\nAt our July 2nd Business Meeting\, Dwight Farmer was a guest speaker who was very knowledgeable about the NCRS and the upcoming convention.  I had the opportunity to sit next to him after the meeting while having dinner at Reginella’s.  I’d asked about which day(s) would be best to visit during the convention.  He said Tuesday or Wednesday.  Since Tuesday\, August 6th is our monthly business meeting\, it would be better to plan a day trip for Wednesday\, August 7th to visit the convention.  Reviewing the convention calendar (here) for Wednesday\, we’ll have a group arrive at the Convention Center before 9AM to park and enter.  Spend as long as we wish with a break for lunch possibly there or nearby; we can decide while there.  Also\, when ready to leave we can depart as a group or individually.  Considering traffic at the HRBT\, we should leave 2-3PM to head home.  For those wishing to go we can expect to pay $5.00/car to park and then $10/person donation to enter the Convention. No need to drive your corvette; of course\, unless you want to!  I’ve set up an RSVP (below) for the Wednesday\, August 7th visit. \nSouthside beachcombers can meet Bill Kaelin at 7:45AM behind the Bojangles at the Southern Shopping Center located at 7519 Tidewater Dr\, Norfolk\, VA 23505 (the near the interchange of I-64 and Tidewater Dr).  We’ll roll at 8:00AM and head to the convention center to hopefully arrive before 9AM. \nSuffolk beachcombers can meet Ed Bickham at 8:00AM the Applebee’s located at 103 Lake View Pkwy\, Suffolk\, VA 23435. \nOr… if you prefer\, just meet the group at the convention center at 9AM\, just let me know your choice so we can meet up upon arrival \nHere is a list of attendees for the day trip to the Convention on Wednesday\, August 7th: \n\nBill Kaelin\nEd Bickham\nJoe Walsh\nAl Plotnik\nRich Gatling\n\nThis list will be updated periodically.  This list last updated on August 6th. \n  \n \nNCRS will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the 2024 Convention in Hampton Roads and we are planning some very special events to honor this milestone\, including reflections on our long history from surviving founding members. A very special welcome reception is being planned\, more details to come later\, along with other surprises and activities. A special 50th anniversary remembrance will be given to all registrants. Don’t miss this milestone event\, registration opens February 1st.  A schedule of events is here. \nA city with an old soul and a youthful enthusiasm. A Coastal Virginia vacation destination with fascinating sites to see and interesting things to do. A convention city with flexible facilities and a confident\, can-do attitude. Situated in the middle of the Hampton Roads region and the heart of the Mid-Atlantic\, Hampton welcomes vacationers and meeting attendees alike with charming hospitality\, multifaceted attractions and activities and an atmosphere of discovery. \nConsidering Hampton’s coastal heritage\, fresh and local isn’t a trend. It’s a way of life. We were built on our connection with the sea and the local watermen and farmers who bring the freshest ingredients from the docks and farms to your table. From craft breweries to incredible family- and chef–operated restaurants to every fast food option imaginable\, you’ll never have the same meal twice. \nNCRS to Honor American Heritage Candidates and Previous Recipients at its 50th Anniversary National Convention in 2024\nAll current owners of Corvettes that previously received the prestigious NCRS American Heritage Award and candidates for that award in 2024 are invited to be part of a special display of these unique cars at the NCRS National Convention in August 2024. This will be the 50th anniversary of the 1974 founding of the NCRS. All participants will be honored by special placement in the show hall and they will be presented with a commemorative plaque to memorialize this display. \nPlan to enjoy all of these activities as well as some very special Corvette displays and unique Corvettes. Please register as soon as possible beginning February 1\, 2024 either online (greatly preferred and pay a discounted registration fee of $180!) or through the US mail. ($200). Be sure to attend this celebration it took 50 years to achieve. \nRegistration forms postmarked prior to February 1st\, 2024 or incomplete will not be processed and will be returned to the sender. Registration forms received in the Membership Office office after June 1st\, 2024\, will not be processed and will be returned to the sender. Registration for Road Tours must be entered no later than June 1st. Paper Registrations received after June 1st will not be processed and will be returned to the sender. After June 1st\, you may only register on-site at the convention and are subject to a $25 late fee. No car registrations will be accepted after June 1st\, 2024. \nEarly registrations will minimize the chances that your car will be wait-listed\, or that you will not be able to attend a particular event. The later you register\, the greater the chance of disappointment! \nConvention registrations will be confirmed by email (or mail if none exists).\nRegistration packets\, meal tickets\, shirts and name badges\, etc. must be picked up onsite at the NCRS Registration Desk. Please always wear your Convention name badge. It is required for admission to all NCRS Convention events. \nCancellation Information\nConvention and/or Judging Registration cancellations must be received in writing (US Mail\, fax or email – whatever is easiest for you) on or before June 1st\, 2024\, and will be subject to a $25 service charge. There will be no refunds for cancellations received after June 1st\, 2024. On that date\,we confirm all the tours\, meals\, etc. with our various vendors. If you cannot attend after that late date\, the NCRS is responsible for paying our vendors for anything you ordered: therefore\, no refunds. \nSpecial Cancellation Information\nSpecial Cancellation of all or part of a registration is available to members who are scheduled for a judging prerequisite in Marlboro\, MA (05/30-6/1\, 2024). If a member fails to achieve the prerequisite\, he/she will be permitted to cancel thru Monday\, June 3rd\, 2024. \nCovid Restrictions\nThe National Corvette Restorers Society\, Inc. SUMMARY:13th Annual Extortion 17 Ride
DESCRIPTION:Time change!  We need to be at Lendy’s Cafe no later than 8:00AM!\nThe Virginia Patriot Guard (VPG) organizes this event every year.  We have the Virginia Beach Police escort the ride which encircles Virginia Beach.  We start at Lendy’s Cafe.  There we will have a ceremony with an Honor Guard\, the National Anthem\, a benediction\, and the Frogmen MC will be reading the names of the 30 Soldiers\, Sailors\, Airmen and 1 Military Service Dog who gave their ultimate sacrifice defending our freedom.  For those who do not know Extortion 17 refers to the call sign used for the helicopter transporting special ops personnel which was shot down over Afghanistan on August 6th\, 2011.  Here is a link to a good write up about this tragedy.  Once the ride is over\, you can go or stay at Lendy’s Cafe for lunch and beverages. \nKnow that we may be asked to carry gold star family members\, so let me know if you will have an empty seat and are willing!  The VPG needs to know the number of cars attending so they can rope off an area for our reserve parking. \nHere’s a list of beachcombers (listed by car) participating in the ride: \n\nWendy Hanson and Bill Kaelin\nLV and Tank Torain\nLisa and Tom Quicke\nMarge and Joe Wryk\nWes and Preston Powers\nCynthia and Frank Little\nRodney Elliot and Kristie Hollingsworth\nJeff Biggs\nTerrie and Kent Wagoner\nDee Dee and Howard Hodges\n\nThis list will be updated periodically.  This list last updated on August 2nd. \n

SUMMARY:Black Hills Corvette Classic
DESCRIPTION:Several club members will be heading to South Dakota!  Ed Bickham of our club spoke at the February business meeting discussing this event.  The Black Hills Corvette Club (BHCC) hosts an annual event which is a drive across South Dakota!  The event starts on the east side of South Dakota in Souix Falls on Wednesday with events all day from 9:00AM-10:00PM\, Thursday is the drivers meeting at 7:30AM.  The caravan starts at 8:00AM to begin the 390-mile drive across the state to Spearfish on the west side of South Dakota.  Arriving around 2:00PM there is hotel registration at the Holiday Inn until 5:00PM and then festivities at the hotel continue through 9:00PM.  On Friday\, there are guided and self-guided tours\, a poker run\, auto cross\, a mystery brunch run\, with vendors all day.  The evening has a “Vette Street USA” in downtown Spearfish with a car show\, entertainment\, and plenty of food and drink. Then on Saturday\, more guided and self-guided tours\, a poker run\, a dyno challenge\, 70’s Corvette showcase with lunch\, vendors all day\, culminating with an evening awards banquet and farewell party.  A link describing this is here.  Also Motor Trend has a webpage for this event when it was held in 2018 including a video and photos.  The webpage is here. Whew! \nIf interested\, this link also has their registration and accommodations for both in Souix Falls and Spearfish.  He’s been planning the hotel arrangements prior to this event to get us from here in Southeast Virgina to Souix Falls.  There is some urgency here since the Holiday Inn in Spearfish is expected to sell out by the end of February.  You would need to book this early and hope they still have rooms.  A link to the Holiday Inn’s contract for the stay during this event in Spearfish is here.  The contract identifies the stay is not refundable after March 1st when they charge for the first night of the stay. \nOverall\, with the drive to Souix Falls and then the drive back from Spearfish after the event it’s a 9 or more days round trip from here in Southeast Virginia.  Ed is our lead for this event.  For more information contact him at 757-434-3046.
