SUMMARY:St Patrick's Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:The Norfolk St. Patrick’s Day Parade kicks off at 10:00 AM\, and it just might be the most exciting parade we participate in! Stretching over 1.5 miles\, the route is packed with an energetic and spirited crowd\, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of celebration. From lively crowds to festive green attire\, the enthusiasm is contagious at every turn. A dedicated police presence ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all\, allowing everyone to fully embrace the festivities. Rain or shine\, the parade marches on—so come ready to celebrate\, even if there’s a light drizzle! \nBeforehand\, we will be meeting between 8:15 AM and 8:30 AM at the Southern Shopping center behind the Bojangles (7519 Tidewater Drive\, Norfolk\, VA 23505) there you will be asked to sign our customary NCCC Waiver Form.  At 8:30 AM the Beachcombers will drive together (approximate 2 miles) and make a left on Westmont Avenue to our parade staging location.  We have the same staging location as we had last year:  “Section 2\, Position 43”.  As last year\, a very close street address to this is: 142 E Westmont Ave\, Norfolk\, VA 23503.  Once parked/staged\, we’ll decorate our cars and wait for our turn to start.  Although the parade steps off at 10:00AM\, it usually takes 1/2 hour before we roll.  The anticipation for all parade participants is quite exciting.  The parade route is on the back side of the flyer (red button on this page labeled “Download Flyer”.  You’ll see that when we roll\, we turn right onto Granby St and continue to the last left turn before E Ocean View Avenue and then another left onto First View Street where the parade ends shortly after. \nBy all means bring decorations for your car and wear attire appropriate as long as its green! \nOnce the parade is over\, you can head home or head to near the Columbian Club of Ocean View at 211 W Government Ave\, Norfolk\, VA 23503.  The club hosts an after party which starts after the parade is over (approximately noon) and ends at 4PM.  The after party is open to everyone who is 21 years of age or older.  The party serves water\, soda\, beer and wine; and there are food vendors.  There is an outdoor stage with a band.  There is also a band playing inside.  It’s a lot of fun!  The back side of the flyer also shows where the Columbian Club is located.  I’ll provide a map to the after-party. \nBelow is a list of cars with Driver and Passenger names: \nList of cars going: \n\n\n\n \nName\n \n\n\n1\nDave Ambrose\nKaren\n\n\n2\nPatrick H. DESCRIPTION:Back & Tail of the Dragon – April 21st – 26th\nTotal Drive time for this trip is about 26 Hours & 42 Minutes (1525 Miles). \nApril 21st (Day 1):  Depart Greenbrier Mall drive to Marion\, Virginia.  In Marion we will pick up VA 16 North to Tazewell\, Virginia. This is the Back of the Dragon and is about 33 miles long and takes about an hour to drive. Spend the night in or near Tazewell. \nApril 22nd (Day 2): Depart Tazewell and drive to the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort\, Kentucky.  While at Buffalo Trace\, plan to visit their gift shop to purchase the premium bourbon of the day. Spend the night in or near Frankfort. \nApril 23rd (Day 3): Return to Buffalo Trace to purchase the premium bourbon of the day before heading to Louisville\, Kentucky. Drive to Michter’s Distillery for a tour and tasting followed by a drive to Angel’s Envy Distillery for a tour and tasting. Spend the night in or near Louisville. \nApril 24th (Day 4):  Leave Louisville and drive to Deals Gap\, North Carolina. This will include a drive of the Tail of the Dragon. Spend the night in or near Deals Gap. \nApril 25th (Day 5): Drive to Holly Springs\, NC and spend the night. SUMMARY:The Norfolk Annual NATO Parade
DESCRIPTION:The Norfolk annual NATO parade is the longest continuously running parade in Hampton Roads and the only parade in the United States honoring NATO!  Over 100 Parade Units with local and visiting high school bands\, U.S. and International Military bands\, and colorful floats which represent each of the NATO Member Nations! SUMMARY:Valentine's Day Fun Run - 2026
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading to the Surf Rider in Poquoson\, VA.  A link to the Surf Rider’s menu is here. \nWe’ll first meet at 11:00AM at Greenbrier Mall at the parking lot next to Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant.  We’ll sign our NCCC waiver\, have our driver’s meeting at 11:15AM\, and head out for a 40-minute/28-mile drive to Suffolk.  We’ll arrive at 12:00PM to stop and meet other beachcombers at the Food Lion located at 2815 Godwin Blvd\, Suffolk VA 23434.  As needed\, rest rooms are in the Food Lion at the end of aisle 11 next to the Frozen Foods.  We’ll have our west side beachcombers sign our NCCC waiver\, then have another driver’s meeting at 12:15PM and head out at 12:20PM for our fun run.  The fun run will take approximately 40 minutes and 21 miles of back roads as we head north out of Suffolk towards Smithfield and Bartlett.  We should be driving through at Bartlett at 1:10PM where we’ll turn on Route 17 to head over the James River Bridge.  From Bartlett\, its approximately 35 minutes and 19 miles to the Surf Rider. \nFor those attending the luncheon at the Surf Rider but do not wish to participate in the fun run drive can just head to the Surf Rider and meet the fun run group which should arrive between 1:30 and 1:45PM.  We should hopefully be seated before 2:00PM to begin our luncheon.  We will give out red roses and chocolates.  Between 3:30 and 4:00PM we’ll have announcements and pick our door prize winners!  Afterwards we’ll have photos both inside and outside the restaurant.  At that time\, each will find their way home.  Some may wish to continue the day.  This will be discussed at the Food Lion meetup.  If there is a group wanting to go somewhere\, we’ll meet after the luncheon outside the Surf Rider and determine where and head there.

SUMMARY:15th Annual Extortion 17 Ride
DESCRIPTION:Extortion 17 was the call sign of a U.S. Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter that was shot down in Afghanistan in 2011. The crash was the greatest loss of life to Naval Special Warfare since the start of the Afghan War in 2001. The Extortion 17 Ride is an annual event that honors the 30 American service members and military dog who died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan in 2011.   Here is a link to a good write up about this tragedy.  Once the ride is over\, you can go or stay at YNot Pizza for lunch and beverages. \n\n\nThe Virginia Patriot Guard (VPG) hosts this event\, with the Virginia Beach Police providing an escort for the ride around Virginia Beach. The event includes a ceremony honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. \nWe have a change of location where to meet.  We will not be meeting at Lendy’s Cafe this year.  We will be meeting at the YNot Pizza in Great Neck Square Shopping Center. between 8:00-15AM. See the Flyer (the red “Download Flyer” button on this page).  For the address\, see the blue “VENUE” box on this webpage.  Also\, we’d like to know if your passenger seat will be empty.  We have VIPs wishing to ride in our Corvettes!  I’m not sure how many spots we have available for our cars.  Last year we had a 20-car limit. SUMMARY:Oceana Air Show - 2026
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, the Beachcombers have been supporting the Virginia Patriot Guard Riders with their vignette at the Oceana Air Show.  This year will be like last year with our cars on the Tarmac each day of the air show as part of the “Static Display”.  We will be adjacent to where the VPG will have their motorcycles (left/southwest of show center).  We will be escorting dignitaries in our cars each day of the air show.  Knowing the Oceana Air show website (here) indicates the air show is Saturday and Sunday.  There is an air show on Friday.  The Friday air show is not open to the public.  It is open only to DOD members\, their families\, and STEM 5th graders from local schools.  We will open the air show each day.  This year’s theme is “Inspire\, Educate\, Soar”.  Our vignette will start at 10:00AM and should be finished around 10:30AM or so.  After the vignette\, you can leave NAS Oceana or return to the static display and watch the air show.  Later if you wish\, you will be able to leave before the end of the air show.  The air show will end after the Blue Angles fly.  They are scheduled to start at 3:00PM. \nAll drivers and passengers need to be vetted!  Alternates too!  We will be filling out forms for this special base access.  The exception to this is if you have a DOD ID which already gives you base access.  Our vetting form was submitted August 28th.  So only Beachcombers with DOD IDs (or others who are on the vetting paperwork) can fill in if you cannot make it. \nWith our support each of the 3 days of the air show\, we will be needing 6-8 cars each day on Saturday and Sunday.  On Friday\, we can have 8 cars\, but some may not be participating in the vignette.  If we already have 8 cars on Friday\, 8 on Saturday\, 8 on Sunday\, please sign up as an alternate for which days you can be available.  It is inevitable that personal reasons get in the way of attending\, and we need to go down the list of alternates who have been vetted to ensure we have enough cars to support the VPG. \nKnow that this is a rain or shine event!  Should the Air Boss running each day’s Air Show decide to cancel/postpone that day’s show due to weather\, I’ll let each participant know. \nFor those interested in knowing more about the Virginia Patriot Guard\, you can visit their website here. \nWe will be staging on base each day at 7:30AM at the Navy Exchange (NEX) which off of Tomcat Blvd and before/outside the Main Gate (Gate 1). The address of the NEX is within the blue “VENUES” box on this page which has a navigation link for your cell phone when driving in your car.  We will roll when all participants have arrived or no later than 8:00AM turn left on Tomcat Blvd and proceed through the Main Gate.  Once past the Main Gate\, we will proceed to where we have our static display which will have us roll through an on-base checkpoint.  For participants specific details will be forthcoming with an email each will receive before Monday\, September 16th.
