SUMMARY:14th Annual Extortion 17 Ride
DESCRIPTION:Extortion 17 was the call sign of a U.S. Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter that was shot down in Afghanistan in 2011. The crash was the greatest loss of life to Naval Special Warfare since the start of the Afghan War in 2001. The Extortion 17 Ride is an annual event that honors the 30 American service members and military dog who died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan in 2011.   Here is a link to a good write up about this tragedy.  Once the ride is over\, you can go or stay at YNot Pizza for lunch and beverages. \n\n\nThe Virginia Patriot Guard (VPG) hosts this event\, with the Virginia Beach Police providing an escort for the ride around Virginia Beach. The event includes a ceremony honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. \nWe have a change of location where to meet.  We will not be meeting at Lendy’s Cafe this year.  We will be meeting at the YNot Pizza in Great Neck Square Shopping Center. between 8:00-15AM. See the Flyer (the red “Download Flyer” button on this page).  For the address\, see the blue “VENUE” box on this webpage.  Also\, we’d like to know if your passenger seat will be empty.  We have VIPs wishing to ride in our Corvettes!  I’m not sure how many spots we have available for our cars.  Last year we had a 20-car limit. I still haven’t heard about a car limit for us\, but I do have an updated parking lot map which shows where cars are to park (in magenta/purple above the motorcycles).  Sign up early so you don’t get cut-off and moved to an alternates list! \n\n\n\nEvent lead: Bill Kaelin – Cell ph#: 757-343-4873 \n\n\n\nHere’s a list of beachcombers (listed by car) participating in the ride and if your passenger seat will be empty and okay for a VIP to ride along:\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nWendy and Bill Kaelin / No\nLisa and Tom Quicke / No\nFrank Little and Bud / No\nKristie Hollingsworth / No\nPreston Powers / Yes\nLV and Tank Torain / No\nMichael Caleen / Yes\nEllen Caleen / Yes\nAngela and Michael Stallworth / No\nMichele and Perry Suttle / No\nSkip Cutting / Yes\nJeff Biggs / Yes\nConnie and Tim Miller / No\nMike Ware / Yes\n\n\n \nThis list will be updated periodically.  This list last updated on July 31st\, 2025.\n \nBelow shows the route which has expanded since last year. Now to be 30 miles to now be 1 mile for each lost serviceman. The red pin is the location of the Great Neck Square shopping center. Also below shows parking at the Great Neck Square shopping center. Since this is our first time at the new location\, I’m not sure where we’ll be so look for parked Corvettes.\n \n\n \nThe opening ceremony will be live-streamed on YouTube starting at 8:45AM.  Anyone interested can follow the link:\n \nhttps://youtube.com/live/ZeUZ2hkAcmo?feature=share\n

SUMMARY:Zip Corvette Customer Appreciation Day
DESCRIPTION:This is a great event for the club for several reasons. First\, it provides an opportunity to engage in conversations with members and officers of the Corvette Club of Richmond\, as well as other Corvette clubs and enthusiasts. Second\, it’s a chance to distribute flyers for our VAVB car show event. Third\, it could be the perfect time to start preparing our VAVB goodie bags. They will provide us with approximately 110 ZIP Corvette plastic bags\, along with swag and gifts to fill them. \nJoe Wryk will be the Lead. Meet at Abuelo’s at 9:00 am to sign waiver and proceed to Zip in Mechanicsburg (near Richmond). Joe will pick up the goodie bag “swag” from Zip. Not planning on late lunch since this is Chili Cook-off day!

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading to the Surf Rider in Poquoson\, VA.  A link to the Surf Rider’s menu is here. \nWe’ll first meet at 11:00AM at Greenbrier Mall at the parking lot next to Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant.  We’ll sign our NCCC waiver\, have our driver’s meeting at 11:15AM\, and head out for a 40-minute/28-mile drive to Suffolk.  We’ll arrive at 12:00PM to stop and meet other beachcombers at the Food Lion located at 2815 Godwin Blvd\, Suffolk VA 23434.  As needed\, rest rooms are in the Food Lion at the end of aisle 11 next to the Frozen Foods.  We’ll have our west side beachcombers sign our NCCC waiver\, then have another driver’s meeting at 12:15PM and head out at 12:20PM for our fun run.  The fun run will take approximately 40 minutes and 21 miles of back roads as we head north out of Suffolk towards Smithfield and Bartlett.  We should be driving through at Bartlett at 1:10PM where we’ll turn on Route 17 to head over the James River Bridge.  From Bartlett\, its approximately 35 minutes and 19 miles to the Surf Rider. \nFor those attending the luncheon at the Surf Rider but do not wish to participate in the fun run drive can just head to the Surf Rider and meet the fun run group which should arrive between 1:30 and 1:45PM.  We should hopefully be seated before 2:00PM to begin our luncheon.  We will give out red roses and chocolates.  Between 3:30 and 4:00PM we’ll have announcements and pick our door prize winners!  Afterwards we’ll have photos both inside and outside the restaurant.  At that time\, each will find their way home.  Some may wish to continue the day.  This will be discussed at the Food Lion meetup.  If there is a group wanting to go somewhere\, we’ll meet after the luncheon outside the Surf Rider and determine where and head there. \nHere is a list of attendees: \n\n\n\n1\nDave\nAmbrose\n\n\n2\nKaren\nAmbrose\n\n\n3\nJoe\nBadali\n\n\n4\nMary\nBadali\n\n\n5\nCarolyn\nBickham\n\n\n6\nEd\nBickham\n\n\n7\nMark\nConrad\n\n\n8\nPeggy\nConrad\n\n\n9\nGene\nCooper\n\n\n10\nGinny\nCooper\n\n\n11\nBrenda\nCutting\n\n\n12\nSkip\nCutting\n\n\n13\nMelissa\nFarrar\n\n\n14\nCarol\nFitzgerald\n\n\n15\nCarol\nFitzgerald\n\n\n16\nRichard\nGatling\n\n\n17\nSandi\nGatling\n\n\n18\nWendy\nHanson\n\n\n19\nDee Dee\nHodges\n\n\n20\nHoward\nHodges\n\n\n21\nBill\nKaelin\n\n\n22\nBrenda\nKitchens\n\n\n23\nLarry\nKitchens\n\n\n24\nFran\nKummers\n\n\n25\nJohn\nKummers\n\n\n26\nBeth\nLiivak\n\n\n27\nHeldur\nLiivak\n\n\n28\nCynthia\nLittle\n\n\n29\nFrank\nLittle\n\n\n30\nConnie\nMiller\n\n\n31\nTim \nMiller\n\n\n32\nPatrick\nNolan\n\n\n33\nDebbie\nOrbach\n\n\n34\nJacob\nOrbach\n\n\n35\nAl\nPlotnik\n\n\n36\nNickie\nPlotnik\n\n\n37\nPreston \nPowers\n\n\n38\nLisa\nQuicke\n\n\n39\nThomas\nQuicke\n\n\n40\nDiane\nReitnouer\n\n\n41\nKeith \nReitnouer\n\n\n42\nGale\nRidgely\n\n\n43\nWade \nRidgely\n\n\n44\nBarbara\nSchultz\n\n\n45\nPete\nSchultz\n\n\n46\nKelly\nSt.Clair\n\n\n47\nSteven\nSt.Clair\n\n\n48\nEvan\nStallings\n\n\n49\nBob \nStone\n\n\n50\nJulie\nStone\n\n\n51\nMichele\nSuttle\n\n\n52\nPerry\nSuttle\n\n\n53\nLV\nTorain\n\n\n54\nMichael\nTorain\n\n\n55\nAndy\nvan der Poll\n\n\n56\nElaine\nvan der Poll\n\n\n57\nKent\nWagoner\n\n\n58\nTerrie\nWagoner\n\n\n59\nJOE\nWALSH\n\n\n60\nJoe\nWryk\n\n\n61\nMarge\nWryk

SUMMARY:Mayflower Marathon
DESCRIPTION:As in year’s past\, we participate on the Sunday before Thanksgiving with a lunch or dinner for the group afterwards.  A link to the Foodbank’s event is here.  We will meet at 1:45PM at the Lynnhaven Mall between JCPenney and Dillard’s.  Our drop-off donation will be at 2:30PM.  After our donation for those who wish to go\, we will have a late lunch/early dinner at the mall at Las Palmas 2 Mexican Restaurant (the address is within the blue box on this page under “VENUES”).  Our flyer is here. \nBring non-perishable food and money/check for donation.  For more\, here is the Foodbank Shopping List. \nFrom an anonymous visitor… \nSo\, I spent some time at a Food Bank today and spoke to the people getting food. Here are some things I learned from those in need: \n\nEveryone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter which is hard to get from regular food banks.\nBoxed milk is a treasure\, as kids need it for cereal which they also get a lot of.\nEveryone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.\nThey cannot eat all the awesome canned veggies and soup unless you put a can opener in too or buy pop tops.\nOil is a luxury but needed for Rice a-Roni which they also get a lot of.\nSpices or salt and pepper would be a real gift.\nTea bags and coffee make them feel like you care.\nSugar and flour are treats.\nThey fawn over fresh produce donated by farmers and grocery stores.\nSeeds are cool in Spring and Summer because growing can be easy for some.\nThey rarely get fresh meat.\nTuna and crackers make a good lunch.\nHamburger Helper goes nowhere without ground beef.\nThey get lots of peanut butter and jelly but usually not sandwich bread.\nButter or margarine is nice too.\nEggs are a real commodity.\nCake mix and frosting makes it possible to make a child’s birthday cake.\nDishwashing detergent is very expensive and is always appreciated.\nFeminine hygiene products are a luxury\, and women will cry over that.\nEveryone loves Stove Top Stuffing.\n\nIn all the years I have donated food\, I bought what I thought they wanted but have never asked. I am glad I did. If you are helping a Family\, maybe this can help you tailor it more. It does for me! \n

SUMMARY:2024 Oceana Air Show
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, the Beachcombers have been supporting the Virginia Patriot Guard Riders with their vignette at the Oceana Air Show.  This year will be like last year with our cars on the Tarmac each day of the air show as part of the “Static Display”.  We will be adjacent to where the VPG will have their motorcycles (left/southwest of show center).  We will be escorting dignitaries in our cars each day of the air show.  Knowing the Oceana Air show website (here) indicates the air show is Saturday and Sunday.  There is an air show on Friday.  The Friday air show is not open to the public.  It is open only to DOD members\, their families\, and STEM 5th graders from local schools.  We will open the air show each day.  This year’s theme is “Inspire\, Educate\, Soar”.  Our vignette will start at 10:00AM and should be finished around 10:30AM or so.  After the vignette\, you can leave NAS Oceana or return to the static display and watch the air show.  Later if you wish\, you will be able to leave before the end of the air show.  The air show will end after the Blue Angles fly.  They are scheduled to start at 3:00PM. \nLt. Amanda Lee\, a graduate of ODU (B.S. in Biochemistry)\, will be flying Blue Angel #4 (the slot)\, during the show.  The link here has all of the officers on the current Blue Angel’s team.  You can read about her\, as well as all of the team members. \nAll drivers and passengers need to be vetted!  Alternates too!  We will be filling out forms for this special base access.  The exception to this is if you have a DOD ID which already gives you base access.  Our vetting form was submitted August 28th.  So now\, only Beachcombers with DOD IDs (or others who are on the vetting paperwork) can fill in if you cannot make it. \nWith our support each of the 3 days of the air show\, we will be needing 6-8 cars each day on Saturday and Sunday.  On Friday\, we can have 8 cars\, but some may not be participating in the vignette.  If we already have 8 cars on Friday\, 8 on Saturday\, 8 on Sunday\, please sign up as an alternate for which days you can be available.  It is inevitable that personal reasons get in the way of attending\, and we need to go down the list of alternates who have been vetted to ensure we have enough cars to support the VPG. \nWe have a special guest this year!  Richard Petty’s grandson\, Thad\, will be participating in our vignette on Saturday and Sunday!  He will be in his NASCAR truck and parked alongside our group.  A link to read a little about Thad is here. \nKnow that this is a rain or shine event!  Should the Air Boss running each day’s Air Show decide to cancel/postpone that day’s show due to weather\, I’ll let each participant know. \nFor those interested in knowing more about the Virginia Patriot Guard\, you can visit their website here. \nWe will be staging on base each day at 7:30AM at the Navy Exchange (NEX) which off of Tomcat Blvd and before/outside the Main Gate (Gate 1). The address of the NEX is within the blue “VENUES” box on this page which has a navigation link for your cell phone when driving in your car.  We will roll when all participants have arrived or no later than 8:00AM turn left on Tomcat Blvd and proceed through the Main Gate.  Once past the Main Gate\, we will proceed to where we have our static display which will have us roll through an on-base checkpoint.  For participants specific details will be forthcoming with an email each will receive before Monday\, September 16th. \nHere are the beachcombers participating (listed by car) each day at the Air Show: \nFriday\, September 20th (cars listed after the 8th are alternates): \n\nBill Kaelin\nMike Ware\nAnnie Lahren\nPete Taylor\nJohnny Jones\nBob Bray\nTom Quicke\nJay Vega\n\n\n\nSaturday\, September 21st (cars listed after the 8th are alternates): \n\n\nDee Dee and Howard Hodges\nWendy Hanson and Bill Kaelin\nLV and Tank Torain\nPreston Powers\nRuth Baum\nTerrie and Kent Wagoner\nAnnie Lahren\nPete Taylor\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 22nd (cars listed after the 8th are alternates): \n\n\nBill Kaelin\nJohn Pitts\nKaren and Dave Ambrose\nAnnie Lahren\nRalph Scichilone\nKristie Hollingsworth\nPete Taylor\nMike Ware\n\n\n\n  \nThese lists will be updated periodically.  These lists last updated on September 21st.

SUMMARY:13th Annual Extortion 17 Ride
DESCRIPTION:Time change!  We need to be at Lendy’s Cafe no later than 8:00AM!\nThe Virginia Patriot Guard (VPG) organizes this event every year.  We have the Virginia Beach Police escort the ride which encircles Virginia Beach.  We start at Lendy’s Cafe.  There we will have a ceremony with an Honor Guard\, the National Anthem\, a benediction\, and the Frogmen MC will be reading the names of the 30 Soldiers\, Sailors\, Airmen and 1 Military Service Dog who gave their ultimate sacrifice defending our freedom.  For those who do not know Extortion 17 refers to the call sign used for the helicopter transporting special ops personnel which was shot down over Afghanistan on August 6th\, 2011.  Here is a link to a good write up about this tragedy.  Once the ride is over\, you can go or stay at Lendy’s Cafe for lunch and beverages. \nKnow that we may be asked to carry gold star family members\, so let me know if you will have an empty seat and are willing!  The VPG needs to know the number of cars attending so they can rope off an area for our reserve parking. \nHere’s a list of beachcombers (listed by car) participating in the ride: \n\nWendy Hanson and Bill Kaelin\nLV and Tank Torain\nLisa and Tom Quicke\nMarge and Joe Wryk\nWes and Preston Powers\nCynthia and Frank Little\nRodney Elliot and Kristie Hollingsworth\nJeff Biggs\nTerrie and Kent Wagoner\nDee Dee and Howard Hodges\n\nThis list will be updated periodically.  This list last updated on August 2nd. \n
